(ZZ’s) GAME DESIGN CLINIC: Practical Game Design Techniques Training

Game designer, narrative designer, writer, and educator at Masaryk University, ex-Ashborne Games

Ever wanted to make a game yourself? Have you ever tried to get better at the craft of game design? The Game Design Clinic provides a time effective way to train practical game design in a focused environment. Imagine something like an intensive game jam but the outcome is you honing your design skill set with condensed technique training plus a game prototype.

The course is ideal for developers with prior skills in game design processes.

TECHNIQUES

  • rapid observation-based game analysis (theory fundamentals, examples, training)
  • game-loop visualization (training)
  • play-based iterative design decision making (principles, examples, training)
  • game design improvisation (fundamentals, training)
  • self-motivation for game design craft and self-learning (fundamentals, examples, tips’n’tricks)

CONTENT

A full day of game design training. An hour per technique (5h). More than half of the time is spent on practicing the techniques during the courses.

AFTER-ACTION EVENT

Refreshments, music, drinks, discussions, playsessions of created prototypes, industry professionals as playtesters.

What's next after registration?

  1. Pre-workshop questionnaire and interview
    The instructor will assess your game development and language skills, professional and self-study experiences, individual goals and motivations for attending.
  2. Acceptance or rejection email + payment info
    Acceptance is based on our capacity and your answers to the questionnaire.
    Your registration will be finalized after you complete payment by following the instructions in the second email.
  3. Organizational email
    Confirmation of time, place, schedule, catering and transportation to the workshop.
  4. Conversation with the instructor via email
    The instructor will provide you with information about what to expect, what equipment to bring and software to install.
  5. Post-workshop email
    We'll provide you with links to the workshop materials, handouts, assignments etc., as well as any photos that were taken during the workshop.
  6. Post-workshop questionnaire
    A feedback form about the quality of the event, things you enjoyed, and what we could improve. Please fill it out to make future workshops even better!

About Zdeněk

Zdeněk Záhora is a consultant and expert in game education in the areas of prototyping, game design, game analysis, narrative design and writing. He has worked on Last Train Home, Comanche, Dark Train and Future Factory. He has been a lecturer in game design, game research and game history at Masaryk University for more than a decade and has taught at several high schools and universities in the Czech Republic. He is a long-time supporter of the Brno gaming scene, co-organizing regular GameDev Area Meetups and co-founder of the Game Cluster and MU Game Studies NGOs. When he's not playing games, he writes sci-fi novels and plays bass guitar in the jazz-metal band Edain and the jazz-rock underTRIO.
