Workshop

Environmental Storytelling in Games

Senior Illustrator at Ghost Story Games, previously worked on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series

In this workshop, we’ll dive into the fascinating process of creating in-game assets that seamlessly integrate into two distinct game worlds. We will design two different (2D) health potions / drinks / first aid, each tailored to a different game genre – one in an elegant Art Deco style, and the other reflecting a sleek, futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic.

After crafting the potion designs, we will focus on creating custom labels and developing immersive in-game advertisements to showcase them. Together, we’ll explore how similar assets can be adapted to fit different environments, enhancing player engagement.

TECHNIQUES

  • designing 2D health potion bottles, essential in aiding the player's recovery
  • creating custom labels for these bottles, incorporating branding elements
  • using the same visual and textual details, we will then design in-game advertisements to seamlessly integrate these assets into the game world

By the end of this session, you will have a clearer understanding of how to design authentic and compelling game elements that are crucial to storytelling in any game world. You will also learn about the journey of a 2D concept artist or illustrator in a video game studio as you experience the hands-on process of designing, branding and integrating these elements into a game environment.

CONTENT

Designing 2D in-game assets that are either interactive, engaging players through direct interaction, or story-supporting, enriching the narrative and atmosphere of the game.

About Dilara

I was born in Istanbul in 1993 and am now an illustrator and concept artist based in London. Drawing and creating have been my passion for as long as I can remember, and I’ve always loved bringing ideas to life through illustration. After studying graphic design at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University, I started my career working with design studios and companies in Tokyo and Istanbul.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work on some amazing projects, including Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher Franchise during my time as an illustrator at CD Projekt Red. These experiences shaped my approach to creating vibrant, futuristic worlds with rich stories. Now, I’m a Senior Illustrator at Ghost Story Games, where I’m lucky to keep doing what I love every day.
